Attendance Policy
LPP & AES #1, Inc. operate on a 255-day year. Elementary
students are required to attend 210 instructional days each
school year. The other 45 days are considered "intersession"
days. These intersession
days are dispersed at various times throughout our year-round,
52-week program. If an elementary student is absent during
any of the 210 instructional days, he or she is required to
make up these instructional days during intersession days.
Parents are REQUIRED to fill out a "Petition for Makeup of
Intersession Days Request Form", which can be obtained from
the office. Attendance records are checked and tracked on
a daily, weekly and monthly basis. All results are reported
to the Indiana Department of Education. (back
to top)
Backpacks
For the safety and protection of all LPP & AES #1, Inc.
students, backpacks and duffle bags are not allowed. Elementary
students will be issued folders to carry homework back and
forth from home and school. If a student needs to bring an
overnight bag to stay with a family member or friend, than
these bags are to be checked in at the front desk and properly
labeled. These types of bags will be kept in the office and
may be collected at the time of pickup. Preschool students
may bring their change of clothes, receiving-size blankets
and pillow for naptime in a labeled plastic grocery sack.
These bags will also be checked in at the front desk, checked
for proper labeling and distributed by the office staff. Students
should not take their own bags to their room. (back

Bookmobile
The Indianapolis Public Library and LPP & AES #1, Inc.
have joined forces to bring the most current books, publications,
magazines, videos and computer software to our students on
a weekly basis. Elementary students (K-5) have their own library
cards and are trusted with the responsibility of checking
out and caring for their library materials. Students also
participate in different reading programs to earn prizes for
number of books read and projects completed using information
learned from specific subject areas. Our staff is encouraged
to email and/or call ahead to our librarian to request certain
types of materials or several copies of a single publication
for students to use for the 4-block guided reading program
(Grades K-3). Preschool teachers check out area-specific books
and library materials for their students to enjoy for the
week. If a student shows a particular interest in a subject,
such as fire fighters or puppies, than his or her teacher
has the vehicle bring that student more information on the
subject. The Bookmobile provides service to our school YEAR-ROUND!
(back
to top)
Buzzword
The Buzzword is
our monthly school newsletter. This publication provides news to
the parents and community about current and upcoming school events.
All parents are provided with a Daily Review Sheet listing their
student's activities in ALL SUBJECT AREAS for that day. Please review
this information EVERY night with your child. Think of the D.R.S.
as a cliff notes to answer the question, "How was your day?" You
might want to share some details from your day, too! Communication
... the building blocks of life. (back
to top)
Calendar
LPP & AES #1, Inc. publishes two types of calendars each year.
The yearly calendar lists instructional
days, intersession days, holidays, progress reports, parent/teacher
conferences, open house and annual field trips. The second type
of calendar the school provides is a monthly calendar listing birthdays,
special events, in-service programs for students and other points
of interest. The monthly calendar is included in the Buzzword.

Code of Conduct
Student discipline supports a secure and happy learning environment.
Students are taught to respect everyone equally. We foster
an environment where everyone is friendly throughout the pre-school,
kindergarten and elementary grades. Disruptive students are
disciplined and parents are informed at the time of pick-up,
or sooner. Students who are disruptive in any class and are
sent to the office in a habitual manner will meet with administration,
their teachers and parents to discuss our discipline policy
and resolve the situation. Our discipline policy will be activated
at this time and if the behavior does not improve than the
school reserves the right to suspend or expel students. This
discipline policy is available to parents upon formal request
to the office. (back
to top)
Computer Program
LPP & AES #1, Inc. have written benchmarks and timelines
for implementation of a formalized technology program. Students
are expected to move from Beginning learner, to Advanced learner,
to Proficient learner as they progress through grades Pre-K
to 5. A beginning learner will need a high level of teacher
guidance, direction and supervision. An advanced learner will
need less teacher assistance but some degree of supervision
is needed to move forward. A Proficient learner will be able
to proceed without direct teacher supervision relying on learned
concepts and materials and having the teacher available for
questions. (back
to top)
Elementary students receive computer instruction on a daily
basis. The first skill that students accomplish is becoming
advanced keyboarders. The school sets out to accomplish this
goal by incorporating creative writing instruction. Students
write, edit, re-write and publish their stories using MicroSoft
Publisher and Clip-Art. Upon successful completion of three
stories, students earn time to use the Internet. (back
to top)
Curriculum
LPP & AES #1, Inc. provides a challenging curriculum designed
to meet the needs of its students. We emphasize literacy development,
mathematics and our core curriculum units which integrate
social studies, science and the arts with reading, writing
and communications. Integrated units provide links to language
arts, social studies, science, mathematics, health, music
and art. Each unit includes an outcome and guiding question
that guide the instruction. Through these units we teach thinking
skills and thinking behaviors. Character education is integrated
as appropriate. The nurturing environment of the school encourages
individual growth, community awareness, leadership opportunities
and an understanding of the impact of one's words and actions
on others. We enhance our curriculum with guest speakers and
field trips. We also utilize, and continue to build, our outdoor
gardens and lab. Click here

Delayed Opening/Inclement Weather
In the 33 years of operation, LPP & AES #1, Inc. has never
been closed OR opened late for any reason. We have remained
open during the worst weather (blizzard of 1978) when many
of our medical, police, fire and military parents need us
the most. This commitment to be accessible and available is
our public service to our community of working parents. (back
to top)
Dress Code?
WASHABLE AND COMFORTABLE! Our student's have gym (P.E.), health,
science and art everyday. Each day is different, but please
know that students can go from studying phonemes under a tree
to chalkboard races in math to basketball to picking veggies
from the garden to lunch to painting a picture of Spain.
Comfort is key.
However, there are a few things that we strongly discourage.
Clothes and paraphernalia promoting figures, cartoons and
characters which sustain and promote violent and anti-social
behavior. Some examples are: ANY WWF character, Poke Mon,
Power Rangers, etc. Note: Please label any and all
jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves, umbrellas etc. before sending
these items in with your child. (back
to top)
Early Dismissal/Parent Request
Our School Day is 8am-4pm. A custodial parent may request
an early dismissal for their child. Parents must fill out
an "early departure" form at the time of pick-up. Any test,
or assignments that are missed are required to be made up
BEFORE a student is to resume to his/her regular schedule.
The school recommends that the parent inform
the office as soon as possible with specific details of
the early departure. We strongly encourage parents to make
doctor's, dentist, hairdressing and other maintenance appointments
during intersession times of the year. Please refer to the
yearly and/or monthly calendar
for specified days. (back

Emergency School Closing
If the school needs to close for an emergency; fire, tornado,
chemical spill, or any other reason, please tune your radio
stations to 101.9, WKLU FM or call the station directly at
317-239-1019. Any and all information can be obtained from
this station. If you do not have access to a radio, please
tune your televisions to Fox 59, 317-632-5900 and find all
pertinent information pertaining to the emergency and how
and where to pick up your child. Because you can never have
too many back up plans ... if you are unable to get through
to these first numbers, please call Holy Spirit Church at
317-353-9404. (back

Field Trips
As a part of our Social Studies Curriculum, Elementary students
(K-5) attend annual
field trips to various sites utilizing the history and
culture of Indianapolis. The subject matter determines which
field trips are appropriate for different grade levels. Some
of our annual field trips include: State Capital Building,
Indianapolis Historical Society, Indiana State Museum, IMAX
Theatre, The Children's Museum, The Indianapolis Art League,
Madame Walker Theatre, Crispus Attucks Museum, Indianapolis
State Library, The Wheeler Mission, Indianapolis Fire and
Police Departments and Clowes Hall at Butler University. Our
students travel with the staff by chartered buses from Ryder,
"First Student" Transportation Services. (back

Fire and Tornado Drills
Fire and Tornado Drills are conducted in accordance with Indiana
State Regulations. EVERY student and staff member in our school
participate in and understand the emergency procedure as stated
in our School Emergency Preparedness Plan. Each room in the
building has an evacuation plan. LPP & AES #1, Inc. has
a state-of-the-art emergency fire and alarm system which is
directly linked to the fire, police and security stations.

Grading Periods
Students' progress is monitored by their teachers through
quizzes, tests, graded assignments, homework assignments and
observation. Teachers evaluate a student's performance according
to the School Grading Scale. Progress Reports are given at
incremental times during the instructional year. Elementary
students 1-5 receive reports 6 times during the school year.
Kindergarten students receive 5 reports and Pre-Kindergarten
students receive 3 reports each year. (back

Health & Physical Education
LPP & AES #1, Inc. are making an active stand to promote
Health and Wellness in our school, work and lives. All students
3 years old through the 5th grade will have physical education,
health and well being education EVERY DAY! Preschool students
have 1/2 hour of structured P.E. and Elementary students have
one full hour of P.E. EVERY DAY! Our Gym/Health teacher will
be recording weight, height, strength and endurance capabilities
throughout the year. Look for exciting results. Our luncheon
menu has always met all Indiana State Board of Health Standards
for a balanced diet. We are improving our menu by adding fresh
veggies from our garden and fresh store bought fruit whenever
we can. Also, discussions of the food pyramid and how a proper
diet and healthy mind lead to a happy and youthful heart happen
everyday at the lunch table. Parents, we implore you to join
us in the "Wealth of Health" crusade this year. Don't be surprised
if your child comes home and wants to eat apples instead of
candy bars and instead of playing video games would rather
ride his or her bike. Our staff is collectively making an
effort to lead by example by putting our health first. Please
join us and make this at rule at home, too! The best teacher
in life is named...Mr. Example
Other aspects of our Physical Education (P.E.) program include
environmental awareness education. It is our philosophy that
to learn more about our physical bodies, we must also learn
about our physical space in which we live.
Swimming and water safety. Elementary students (K-5) travel
by chartered bus to the Beech Grove Benedict Inn to receive
swimming and water safety practice and instruction. This Olympic
size indoor swimming pool is a nice retreat for students and
staff in the month of May. Look for more details in the Spring.
Bike-a-thon. The school will sponsor a bike-a-thon at Fort
Harrison. Look for details. (back

Hand Washing/Hygiene
We post Indiana State Board of Health Hand-Washing Fact sheets
in each of our bathrooms. This is a subject that we take very
seriously. Students are given the opportunity to wash their
hands many, many times during the day and not just at restroom
breaks. There is always time for cleanliness! (back
to top)
Homework Program
Homework is an important extension of activities begun in
school by students under the guidance of their teachers and
continued at home. Working together, home and school can guide
students as they develop their learning capacities by making
possible experiences which foster learning.
Homework provides for practice of skills and application of
principles based upon work begun in the classroom. It may
enrich school experiences and promote a permanent interest
in learning. A secondary goal of homework is to stimulate
individual initiative, personal responsibility and self-direction.
Due to differences in age levels and modes of instruction
the elementary homework expectations will necessarily differ.
Listed below are the responsibilities of teachers, students
and parents with regard to homework.
Teachers:
*Assign homework that is meaningful and useful to individuals
*Provide appropriate and timely response to all homework assignments
*Provide a balance between long-range and short-term assignments
*Give assignments over weekends, which are no longer than
a daily assignment not assign homework during vacation periods
and on legal and religious holidays
*Monitor long-term assignments in order to avoid last minute
student efforts
*Give clear, concise directions; allow time for student questions;
consider availability of materials; provide legible worksheets
when used
*Inform parents of their role in supervising homework
*Ensure that students who are absent know how they may makeup
homework
*Monitor the effectiveness of homework as reflected in student
performance
Students will:
*Record the directions for homework
*Ask questions when necessary to clarify the assignment
*Follow a schedule and keep materials in order
*Hand in, on time, neat, accurate, and meaningful products
*Plan time for completion of long-term assignments
*Determine and complete homework assigned during absence
Parents will:
*provide a suitable place for study
*assist and correct but not do the actual work and notify
the teacher if students experienced extreme difficulty
*assist students in making wise choices for study session
time
*contact the teacher if he/she observes an absence of homework
**AMOUNT OF HOMEWORK
The amount of time students in the same grade spend on homework
will vary. Students should be assigned homework on a daily
basis that is appropriate to their grade and instructional
level. There will also be times when no written assignment
will be given, allowing students time to review, do research,
and to complete long-term assignments.
K-1st grade: 10-15 minutes 3x a week.
2-3rd grade: 15-30 minutes 3x a week.
4-5th grade: 30-45 minutes 4x a week.
**GRADING/EVALUATION OF HOMEWORK
A teacher, in giving a homework assignment, attaches importance
to that assignment. Therefore, the teacher attaches similar
importance to the grading of that assignment.
1. The teacher checks homework as quickly as possible and
affixes a comment and/or assigns appropriate evaluation to
all written assignments. Thus homework becomes a part of the
report card grade.
2. The student is responsible for submitting each assignment
on its due date. A penalty will be imposed for a late assignment.
3. The teacher will accept only the highest quality work
work which is comparable to regular class work.
4. The teacher will provide discussion time in class to clarify
any misconceptions in the assignment.
5. The parent will be notified whenever a student repeatedly
fails to do his/her homework.
6. Homework is considered an important part of the overall
school program and will therefore be counted as one of the
criteria used in determining a marking period grade.
All homework during absences must be made when the student
returns. (back
to top)
Honor Roll System

Internet Access Student Agreement
Elementary students may only use the Internet during supervised
sessions. This is a school rule and staff policy. (back
to top)
Intersession
Elementary students have 45 intersession days during our instructional,
year-round school. These dates are noted on the yearly calendar.
Please know, that the school is still open for operation during
these times of the year and students still engage in meaningful,
worthwhile and educational experiences. During intersession,
teachers develop a theme and arrange for an array of art projects,
games and fun-fair activities centered around designated topics.
Look for a detailed
list when intersession "rolls" through our school and
takes us on a magical journey to the sands of Egypt, the snow-capped
Alps or to find underwater treasure deep in the Mediterranean
Sea! (back

Late Pick-up
LPP & AES #1, Inc. operates on a 12-hour service day wrapped
around an 8-hour school day. We open from 6amÑ6pm. Our school
day is from 8 am-4pm. We understand that occasions may arise
where parents are detained at work, on the highway or in the
check-out line behind the person who insists on finding the
last penny in the bottom of their bag, no matter how big that
bag may be! If you find yourself in one of these or any other
situation, please do not fret, we are here and will not leave
until every child has left the building.
However, we do ask that you please call as soon as possible
to let us know that you are on your way. This will put your
childÕs mind at ease, as well as the staff member who is waiting
with your child.
Now, considering that the appointed staff member is (agreeably)
kept from her family and evening's activities, the school
does charge a late fee, which goes directly to the staff member
waiting with your child(ren).
The late fees are as follows:
6-6:15 $5
6-6:30 $10
6-6:45 $15
6-7:00 $20
Please note the importance of keeping current information
and telephone numbers with the attendance office! (back

Lunch
All lunches are prepared here on campus each day. All lunches meet
the Indiana State Board of Health guidelines for nutrition and many
times we exceed their criteria. Please look at the Parent's Bulletin
Board located to the left of the Attendance Desk when you pick up
your child to find out what scrumptious delight he or she had that
day or click here to see
this week's lunch menu. Please feel free to ask questions about
what food groups were represented that day. (back

Mission Statement
LPP & AES #1, Inc., A nonsectarian, private school provides
a partnership with parents along with a 52-week (year-round)
instructional program conducive to each child's intellectual,
social, emotional and physical development of children in
the educationally demanding, culturally diverse and globally-oriented
21st Century. (back

Other School Programs
The school offers several different programs to enhance our
curriculum.
Q.U.I.L.T. Questioning and Understanding to Improve
Learning and Thinking is a tutoring program offered for students
who find they may need "extra" help understanding a new concept
or remediation to incorporate previously learned concepts
with new ones. Teachers work directly with the tutor to outline
and monitor students progress and all sessions are written
on a Q.U.I.L.T. Form and sent home to the parent. This is
just another opportunity where we can keep lines of communication
between teachers, students, parents and administration open
at all times. This is a free service to our parents and community.
Should further resources be required, the administration will
inform the parent of programs and agencies to which the parent
may turn to for additional help. LPP & AES #1, Inc. reserves
the right to inform parents of possible situations and in
no way shape or from can any staff member diagnose a problem
or professionally treat any behavior or academic incident.
It is the sole responsibility of the parent to seek outside
help. Our staff can simply recommend that a need to do so
has arisen and could be problematic if the situation is not
addressed.
Anna's Garden. The school has the unique opportunity to provide
a rich outdoor lab to enhance Science and Health curriculum.
Our lab currently consists of a vegetable garden and a flower
garden which all students can experience and enjoy.
Other Programs Continued ... conveniently offered during the
school day!
Private and/or Group Piano, Voice and Percussion lessons are
offered by our Music Director for a fee. Please see the office
for more details. Ages 4 years old 5th grade.
Gymnastics Unlimited offers tumbling, stretch and gymnastics
centered around flexibility and cardio-vascular health. Ages
3 years old 5th grade. (back

Parent Advisory Meetings P.A.M.
LPP & AES #1, Inc. hosts a series of P.A.M. meetings during
the school year. These meetings take place after school at
6:30 and usually last one hour. This is an opportunity for
us to bring some community outreach speakers to you and fill
you in on any necessary details that cannot be covered in
our newsletter or through a memorandum. The school reserves
the right to schedule these meetings as often as deemed necessary
and are not required to entertain any particular group's agenda.
The school sets the time, space and subject matter, pertaining
to business of the school and the best interest of its students
and staff. (back

*Students are highly discouraged from playing tag that is
not directly supervised by the gym teacher as part of an exercise
in class. While the game usually starts out gentle, it seldom
ends that way! Trust us. We encourage games with a clear,
well-defined set of rules.
Sports:
*Basketball, soccer, kickball, softball, volleyball and non-contact
forms of football are some types of games that your child
will learn the rules, skills and concepts to play. We do not
allow dodge ball or contact football.
All students are supervised at all times on the playground.
Safety and school rules are repeatedly discussed before, during
and after outside play. Our Safe School is Cool. (back
